We’ve been pretty busy, although in all different ways in the last few months. I mentioned the February Marquee show in the last blog entry, which went really well and raised a decent amount for Haiti. It also seems like a good time was had by all. Neither Throats nor Hammers were able to play in the end, but Lonewolves proved brilliant headliners and Wolfbeast Destroyer- a really good d-beat/hardcore band from Boston played instead, so it wasn’t the end of the world by any means. We actually got the best reception and reaction I think we have ever received which was brilliant. Our last couple of songs ended up being pretty ridiculous with everyone piling on and pinning me to the ground, as the picture below shows.

It ended up being Jack’s final show with us, as I mentioned before, Console Wars are gonna be bigger than The Stranglers so he hasn’t got enough time for the demands of being in Norwich’s most unpopular 80’s throwbacks… let alone us. As I said before, we are sad that we won’t have such a great guy in the band anymore, he was the inspiration for the dystopian classic ‘Dog City’ and in general is the exact kind of person you would want in a band. Luckily for us we managed to find a pretty brilliant replacement with relative ease. Nic also plays in Sharp Teeth- www.myspace.com/wearesharpteeth and is from Norwich. He got in touch having seen us live a couple of times. We started practising in January with him and never really looked back; he has learnt the songs, helped write new ones and is an all round great guy and everything seemed to fit pretty much straight away. We played our first show with him in March at the Marquee which was pretty good and have plenty more lined up. Initially it looked like he was going to play the February show but he managed to pierce his eardrum a few days before, so we had to get Jack to fill in. It ended up being a pretty good move (apart from the horrific injury) as it was a good way to end things with Jack and move onto the next chapter of the Dorian Gay saga.

Two of us have also started/joined new bands as well as our Dorian Gay responsibilities. My new band are called Jackals (www.myspace.com/wearejackals) and we play fast hardcore. As the cultured /fans of famous naked people among you will know, it features Ginsberg and Peter Olovsky, who was a big fan of the band, as the logo on his chest indicates. They are 6 quid, come in the usual sizes and are printed on Starworld t-shirts which are really soft and nice, and ethically manufactured too, so everyone is happy!  As if that wasn’t enough, we’ll chuck a free EP in with every t-shirt. As everyone knows, hardcore isn’t about the physical product, it’s about sweet t-shirts.

We’ve got a couple of shows in the pipeline, including an awesome string of dates we are lining up for the summer. More on those later. Our next confirmed show though is this one…

I say this in every single entry that I do of this blog, but I really should update this more regularly. This term I have an excuse though because I’m not studying something that I actually fucking love (history) so doing Uni work is something I actually like doing now, rather than finding anything to do instead. But I’m sitting in my warm bedroom in Southend right now, so I’ve got time to do stuff like this.

So what have we been up to since the end of October? Quite a bit… although it doesn’t really seem that way as things have been a bit slow paced and frustrating. Band stuff is still awesome, but at times it’s been pretty difficult to really do everything we want to. It’s mainly because this term has been tight in terms of free time and money and all the kind of boring shit that gets in the way of doing fun stuff. We were planning to record a covers EP as well as an EP over Christmas for release in the New Year, but that’s been put on hold for a little while for a couple of reasons, but mainly because Robbie can’t get back from France for long enough and we ran out of time to be ready. We’ve still got quite a few new songs done though and plenty of plans for future songs. I think it may be more likely that we get a studio over Easter and get Robbie back and spend a week in there recording an album. That’d be cool, although judging by how mental everyone went after two days of recording last time, it could be awful. We’ve also nailed a cover of ‘My Rules’ by Void. It’s awesome to play.

As I mentioned in the last post, we played a show in London at the start of November. It was pretty surreal. We played in Cable Street Studios which I think is just for artists and stuff, and there was some mental guy who looked like Robin Hood if he was born in Dalston walking around the venue. It was all a bit arty, but a really nice place to play. We had a nightmare of a journey down there, and I managed to get drunk then sober up and have a hangover before we played, so I think I grimaced the entire way through our set. We sounded alright though from what I could hear from in front of the stage. I don’t know what anyone else thought.

 The highlight was seeing Jugs punch out a guy I have argued with on the internet. The reason for this was that the guy, in playing atonal noise (just strumming at a guitar, no music to speak of really) and running around being ‘controversial’ with a mask fashioned out of toilet paper and tape, also decided throwing around a severed pigs head was a good idea… and Jugs is vegan and cares about animals and that. My personal feelings about the whole thing aside- it was really crap if you want to know- it was an experience to say the least. Koresh played too, and I really enjoyed their set. Have a listen to them if you haven’t already. I accidentally insulted the promoter when I tried to give him a compliment, but it was a decent gig in the end for us. We stayed in London for a few hours including 10 minutes in an alley with leather clad whip cracking boys and transvestites, before getting a train back to Norwich. I spent most of the day after that in bed. Like I said, surreal.

We also played in Harrow last night, which was Jugs’ first show since he moved there in September. It was awesome that he brought us down, but it kind of made me miss him being in Norwich. The show was with Crocus, NY-Hill Stillness (from France) and Rooftops (Jugs plays guitar for them). It wasn’t as packed as his Norwich shows as Jugs is still finding his feet in the London promoting world, but there were enough people to give us a decent audience, and we played pretty well. The bar man bought a t-shirt and CD so if you see a cool guy in Harrow with an orange and purple tie-dye t-shirt on, tell him that he is a cool guy. The other bands were excellent too, Rooftops playing American 90’s style punk and the other two bands playing screamo type stuff, it was a fun time. I went to London before and spent loads of money on records and comics, including a V for Vendetta mask in Forbidden Planet which may find a way into a show at some point if I have a particular urge to make a twat out of myself.

Oh and as an aside, if you are my friend and live anywhere near London and you haven’t got a good excuse for not coming to see us the last two times we have played in London, fuck you.

We’ve not had anything offered to us in Norwich for a while, our last show was the Burning Love show, which although awesome was quite some time ago. It’s probably because everyone has got bored of us, but I’ve also noticed that there have been fewer hardcore shows happening. Mike still puts on his shows, and there have been a few others, as well as the usual ska/punk stuff, but not a great deal that we would really fit in with. I’ve noticed a few shows like This Is Colour and stuff but I’m not too sure who the promoter is for that, and if he likes This Is Colour he probably wouldn’t want to put us on anyway.

 However, we are playing a show in February, which I am putting on myself. I’m hoping to do this fairly regularly under the WWHRD banner, and feature awesome bands from around the country, maybe even from abroad, but also focus on cool stuff coming out of Norwich. I had an idea that maybe if there was regular shows for local hardcore bands to get on, they might be more encouraged to be more active. Whilst there’s a healthy and tight knit scene in general, I think its a bit of a shame that the local hardcore bands I’m aware of are probably limited to a handful, half of which I am in. Most of the others are made up of people that i am good friends with. Although my friends are awesome, it’d be nice if there were a few more bands to get excited about.

I won’t go on about it too much because there’s nothing more boring than people whinging about their local scene or bigging up how them paying bands to play in a room is going to revolutionary… here’s the flyer for the first show (and our next one in Norwich).

I’m beyond pleased to have Throats and Hammers playing this because they are two of my favourite bands in the UK at the moment. Baptists are friends of mine and are really awesome, doomy hardcore, Lonewolves we all know, and Jackals are my other band. We are pretty cool.

The background of the flyer is a picture taken from some of Francis Galton’s work on eugenics. He made composites of images of people convicted of violent crime or killing people, claiming you could tell that someone had a criminal nature by characteristics of their face. It’s all rather obviously bollocks, but I thought it was interesting and makes a nice flyer, as opposed to ripping off a poster of a film that everyone tells everyone else that they like. It’s also interesting in that if you make a composite of a lot of faces, you get an ‘average’ face, which your brain tells you is attractive because it’s nice to process. So basically, all the criminal faces he came up with made ’criminals’ look like dashing and debonair rogues, and people like average and bland looking people, no matter how much they tell you they like your nose piercing. (This is very much simplified- theres a whole load about this kind of thing knocking about if you fancy a read- and I’ve used a bit of artistic licence but you get the point.)

That’s everything songs and shows wise. But unfortunately this post is gonna have to end on a down note, as Jack (bassist) is leaving the band in the New Year. He is off to find fame and fortune (that’s a joke but they genuinely are doing well for themselves) with his other band Console Wars… and it was becoming too difficult for him to juggle the demands of us playing outside of Norwich, writing and recording and practising alongside all the stuff that they are getting offered too. It sucks arse because we love him very much and he is one of my best friends, so it’s not going to be the same at all. We’ll miss him. But the important thing is we haven’t descended into petty insults (yet) and we still love him and now have time to find someone else before future commitments in terms of recording or shows. There may be a final show with Jack in Norwich to end things on a good note, but we aren’t sure yet. Hopefully we can find a decent replacement, even if they aren’t as funny or generally great as him. But basically, you need to be into the kind of stuff we want to do, be able to learn out songs and play to a good standard, be enthusiastic and willing to practise regularly, and not be a dickhead. A few people have replied already and it’s looking especially promising with one guy, so hopefully it won’t be any more of a setback in terms of time and doing nothing than it has to be, and is only a set back in losing an awesome band mate, but gaining someone new.

We didn’t play the garage show we were supposed to because Tom was ill, which sucks but can’t be helped. I went and it was good (although totally would have been better if we had played) and a great time was had by all.

Jugs has left Norwich for the razzle dazzle of London, which if you arent from here doesnt mean a lot i am sure, but its a big deal because now there will be around 80% less flyers in my hand at various times. It’s also sad because he is a lovely guy and will be missed very much. We also will have far less gig offers as a result.

You should have come to that because we like good music. We played stuff like Beastie Boys, ST, Vile, Misfits, Cut The Shit and loads of other good stuff.

 Burning Love though was awesome. Despite the room not being quite as packed as i expected, there were still most of the hardcore kids that matter in Norwich in attendance. Hang The Bastard were great as ever, i never get tired of seeing them and their array of really really heavy sounding riffs. Burning Love were incredible. Their demo rules (its free so you have no excuse) and it came across even better live. I ran around like a tit for the entire set and sang along with the few bits that i knew. Then I interviewed Mr Colohan for my ‘zine which was also brilliant. Our set went down pretty well i think, and we played good from what i can recall, so that is always a bonus. It was probably the most high profile show we have played so far, and i think we probably gave a good account of ourselves. Some people were never gonna like us, but theres nothing we can do about that. Their loss or something. Jim took some pictures of me running around and screaming, which are up on our myspace, but the best couple i’ve copied over here…

Next up, we have another gig outside of Norwich, this time in London! So if you aren’t from Norwich and have said you would come and see us, you pretty much have no excuse now. Unless you are from Scotland or something.

Its a pretty weird group of bands, with all kinds of noise being made. Which is obviously a good thing. We need a lift to this so if i haven’t asked you already, help us out please.

In terms of new songs, we’ve been quite busy in recent weeks. We have two brand new songs more or less finished and ready to go, and the foundations for a further two pretty much layed out, so they should be done in a couple of weeks. Add this to our plans to record ‘Intro/Clive on 25′ and ‘The Money Will Roll Right In’ and we’ve pretty much got an EP sorted. We are aiming therefore to record this when Robbie comes back from France, probably early January ready for release on a label (tbc) in the new year. However, in addition to this, the 4 of us (without Robbie) are going to record something pretty soon. The main reason for this is to try out a few different recording methods as, as happy as we are with the first EP, we were still learning about recording and stuff and how we should sound, and i think you can hear that at times. We are going to try and replicate how we actually sound a little more closely with the next EP. So, rather than just wasting practise recording sessions etc. we have decided to get something productive out of it- a covers EP. Everything is yet to be finalised (as with the songs for the next EP) and is very much in the formalitive stages, but i think we are working towards having it done by late November/early December, with about 4 covers or something the plan. It’ll probably come out as a free download, but that is also undecided. If you are a label and are interested in putting it out, get in touch!

The last time I updated this we had just played the release show for our EP. I mentioned then a few upcoming shows, but I’ve not got any new flyers for those yet, so I’ll just post them as they are done.

Anyway, most recently we played 3 shows in the space of 4 days. One of them would be generous to call a show really, but I’ll get to that. Anyway, the first was up in Nottingham, for ‘Corefest’. We were all pretty excited about this as previously we had only played one show outside the fine city, and that was in Windsor. We are looking to play more shows around the country in the coming weeks and months. Basically all I want to do is tour for a few weeks and have fun with some of my best friends, but for now this will suffice. Robbie was back for all 3 shows we played this week, as he had a break in between his summer job in France, and starting uni, also in France. It was good to have him back. We met him up in Nottingham, and played without having a prior practise because we are punx. Getting up there was quite frankly an ordeal, as I was feeling a bit worse for wear, due to a lack of sleep, drinking too much wheat beer the day before and not being a good traveller. It was still pretty fun, spraying beer out the window, eating stuff from petrol stations, shouting along to The Cure and discussing the laddish merits of different things such as windfarms (in my opinion, very much laddish) with Luke, who was kind enough to drive us, asking for only petrol money and some food. He’s a champ.

The venue we played was actually really cool. It was called Seven Bar and was an upstairs affair with a proper backstage, a good sized stage, bar and plenty of room for people. A little bit too much room if you ask me, as only 16 people paid in all day. I’m not sure why this is, I suspect its a mix of not enough promotion, promotion to the wrong people, it not being bands people want to see, and local bands not turning up and not bringing people as a result. Those are really the only reasons why a show will be empty, and it seems some promoters fail to realise this at times. It also seems to be the state of hardcore shows that don’t involve a band from America or Gallows and Dead Swans etc. and it kind of sucks. The worst thing about driving and feeling sick for 3 hours is knowing you don’t have the chance to impress people with your music because there is no fucker there. I can play to no one in my bedroom in fucking Norwich.

Whilst this all sounds really quite bitter, I’m actually far less than you might think. We played really well, and it sounded awesome with Robbie playing too. As there was a load of bands playing, all with drivers and stuff (all of whom watched us) along with the 16 people who paid for the gig, there was actually a pretty decent crowd, the majority of which had not seen us before. So we actually had a few people to win over. I think we did as well. Steve from Manuscripts also helped out on ‘Dog City’ which ruled and loads of people said to us after that they enjoyed our set. We managed to flog a few EPs too. So it wasn’t actually the disaster that it looked like being on arrival at the venue.

The other bands that played were all really cool and all seemed like really nice guys.  You should checkout Bays, Into The Dust, Atlantic Hearts, Violent Against Person and Fuck Right Off. It was a shame that a good line-up of UK hardcore bands didn’t get to play to more people, especially as we were all from out of town. We only got paid £20 for travel which meant we were each 8quid short on petrol/train costs, and I spent a fair amount on the aforementioned petrol station food, Chinese takeaway and alcohol, much of which I drank on the way there, but too much of which I had to buy from the venue for £3 a pint.

It always annoys me when we play somewhere that has a bar that is pretty expensive. You, as a band are potentially attracting custom from the place, but you can’t bring your own booze in to drink, and have to pay over the odds just to be pissed enough to play… in somewhere I wouldn’t choose to visit for any other reason. I spend too much on beer that I don’t like very much, I’d rather get a 4 pack of Holsten Pils. Most promoters at this level avoid paying bands expenses beyond travel costs (if they even cover that), so it’s a little bit shit when you end up out of pocket on things like food and drink. Good promoters in my opinion should as far as possible feed bands that are travelling down to play and allow the band to bring in their own drink, alcoholic or otherwise or even better provide something. It’d only take a few people through the door to cover the costs for this kind of thing, and it results in very happy bands… and better shows. Sometimes it seems promoters take bands for granted, especially when they skimp on guarantees due to not enough people coming to the show (something they should be prepared for anyway… if you can’t afford to lose the entire cost of putting on a gig, guarantees, food, venue hire etc. then don’t put the gig on) and forget that without the bands you don’t have a show, with the role of promoter being to do just that…promote the gig. Although to be fair, the promoters we play for in Norwich seem to do their very best… and besides we are within walking distance of the venue. It just makes me laugh sometimes when people put up with being taken for a ride by a promoter who basically does nothing more than book a venue and choose the bands to play. I can fucking do that myself.

After the gig we stayed at an old friend of Petes. They had actually been in a band together 20 odd years ago, but hadn’t seen each other for a while. The less said about their dog the better, although I will say that the bitch loved Pete’s beard. It was awesome of him to let us stay there, even if I did have to share a double bed with Robbie, Jack and Tom. (Their dream night I’m sure).

Hungover pretty nasty again the next day, but we got back with a minimum of fuss and I got to have a shower and a pub roast with a load of my friends. I felt a bit ill in the car and slept half the way, which just made me feel worse. This experience just made me hungry to do it again though. Playing shows rules.

Luckily we got to play another on the next night, at The Marquee, for the LAST EVER sexy Monday, promoted by the ever wonderful Jugs. It was quite an event as Jugs has probably put on every band ever to come from Norwich since he started doing gigs in 2001. When he isn’t organising the gig, he’s watching the bands that someone else has put on, and giving out flyers. He is awesome. Luke’s band played first, The Torn Apart, listen to them. Also playing was Mustard City Rockers (the first time I saw them) who are touring at the moment, Fletch Cadillac and Austrian tough-guy hardcore heroes Bloodshed Remains. We managed to scare off a good few people who were there to see Mustard, we had a couple of sound issues, and whilst it wasn’t the best gig we have ever played, it was awesome to be a part of potentially but hopefully not the last ever Norwich Jugsout gig. It was pretty fun too, and it was us, so we were still awesome. It was also really funny seeing Bloodshed Remains play to a room of pissed up folk punks, which I suspect isn’t quite their usual audience.

The next morning I felt like shit, having been drinking for too many consecutive nights… but I have the excuse of being back at uni, and I can blame Robbie. Jugs had sorted a house show for a missing date in the Bloodshed Remains tour and asked us to play. D-Control played too. As it was short notice Tom couldn’t get out of work, and Jack wasn’t feeling too well, so me Robbie and Pete on our own with a vague plan of what we were gonna do instead, but not much more than that. It almost didn’t happen as a curry eating competition (I was victorious) took it out of Robbie and he felt ill for the rest of the day. We also had to borrow equipment as we couldn’t get our shit back from The Marquee. As it was we played a few acoustic versions of our songs, ‘Dog City’ and ‘Your Missing Cat Is Dead’ which people sang along to thanks to a pre printed lyrics sheet. We also covered ‘Nervous Breakdown’. It was really fucking stupid but really fun, and also quite amusing. I somehow managed to split my jeans during the most downbeat set we have ever played, I got pissed again, smoked a cigar, me Robbie and Wes put parts of our anatomy into a pint glass, and the house ended up with upside down crosses next to its number and a DG logo (dunno who did it though…). Shit went off for Bloodshed Remains too. It just further underlines that house shows should be the future of DIY punk. They are so so so much fun.

hat’s pretty much everything shows wise. Our next one is next weekend, in a garage in Norwich with a load of bands, which again should be excellent. We have a couple in the pipeline for October, including one with Burning Love which I’m currently wetting myself over.

I took a design in to Norwich screen art today as well for our first ever batch of t-shirts.

It’s gonna be black print on white t-shirts, and we are then gonna tie-dye most of them. We are also doing a few tote bags. We only got 30 odd done for this run, so don’t miss out! There are a few interesting things to update people on though.

The EP’s have all been printed and stuff, all that left is to finalise and print the artwork and they will be on sale! The release date we’ve got for them is 4TH SEPTEMBER 09, and conveniently on that date we also have a show, which is a release show of sorts.

I’ll post a picture of the finished articles when they are done, as well as an online link to buy it should you wish to give us your money. The EP will be released on CD, Tape and Download. (Keeping it old school and new school at the same time)

So that is next up, and following that we have COREFEST, as previously mentioned on the 12th, as well as another show at The Marquee on the 14th, but that is yet to be fully confirmed. Robbie is going to be back from France to play both shows, and we can’t wait to have him back… not that we miss him both personally or in band terms, but we feel a bit sorry for him.

There’s a load of other stuff coming up after that as well, including a show in our friends garage in Norwich on the 26th. Flyer…

More on stuff after that closer to the time… I will say this though, a third WWHRD house show is in the pipeline. Hopefully from September (when I move back to Norwich) we will be able to get a load of new songs done, I’ve built up a lot of ideas for songs over the summer and I’m itching to get back into things full time. We also have a couple of covers planned, including one band which you might not expect.

Finally, I will just mention our last gig…

We kind of got asked to do this last minute, but I’m rather glad we did. Although we didn’t play to too many people, it was good to see some of the regular faces again. We also played probably the best set we have without Robbie, and it’s up there with our best sets overall, even if I did fuck up the lyrics to one song. I think I might attribute some of the success to the free food and beer provided by Lucy, Pete and Dempsey which went down rather nicely, but we also should take credit for being awesome I suppose. Thanks to Dempsey for putting us on, and thanks to James Hull, a fellow Norwich regular who played first and put up with me heckling him (in a friendly way of course), I enjoyed his set, it’ll be good to see him again around the fine city. Zapian and Above Them also played, with both playing a sort of melodic punk. Zapian recalled Jawbreaker and stuff like that and were really good, and Above Them sounded like they are big fans of Hot Water Music (I mean that in a nice way). Anyway I had a good evening before heading off to the Bell and Waterfront with Wes and co. I miss Norwich when I’m not there.
